Lamb Shift in Muonic Hydrogen

The Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen continues to be a subject of experimental and theoretical investigation. Here my older work on the subject is updated to provide a complementary calculation of the energies of the 2p-2s transitions in muonic hydrogen. Introduction The energy levels of muonic atoms are very sensitive to effects of quantum electrodynamics (QED), nuclear structure, and recoil, sin...

The Lamb Shift Experiment in Muonic Hydrogen

The subject of this thesis is the muonic hydrogen (μ−p) Lamb shift experiment being performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland. Its goal is to measure the 2S − 2P energy difference in μp atoms by laser spectroscopy and to deduce the proton root–mean– square (rms) charge radius rp with 10 −3 precision, an order of magnitude better than presently known. This would make it possible to t...

Lamb Shift of Muonic Deuterium and Hydrogen

My previous calculations of the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen are reviewed and compared with other work. In addition, numerical results for muonic deuterium are presented. Introduction The energy levels of muonic atoms are very sensitive to effects of quantum electrodynamics (QED), nuclear structure, and recoil, since the muon is about 206 times heavier than the electron [1]. A number of theore...

Maximal Acceleration Corrections to the Lamb Shift of Muonic Hydrogen

The maximal acceleration corrections to the Lamb shift of muonic hydrogen are calculated by using the relativistic Dirac wave functions. The correction for the 2S − 2P transition is ∼ 0.38 meV and is higher than the accuracy of present QED calculations and of the expected accuracy of experiments in preparation. Observation of long-lived muonic hydrogen in the 2S state.

The kinetic energy distribution of ground state muonic hydrogen atoms mup(1S) is determined from time-of-flight spectra measured at 4, 16, and 64 hPa H2 room-temperature gas. A 0.9 keV component is discovered and attributed to radiationless deexcitation of long-lived mu p(2S) atoms in collisions with H2 molecules. The analysis reveals a relative population of about 1%, and a pressure-dependent ...
